Elf Shelf

Every year in the first part of December, the Horizon PTA sponsors the Elf Shelf program. This program is designed to empower students by being able to purchase inexpensive gifts for family members and friends. Our volunteers gift wrap and label each gift so that the student can bring home wrapped gifts for to put under their families Christmas trees.

Bus Safety

Every year the PTA sponsors a bus safety day for the kindergarteners. This program is designed to help them learn the rules for riding a bus and be familiar with the bus drivers. This is important for those children who normally ride a car to school and to whom a field trip may be their first experience riding a bus.

Each Kindergarten student will be invited to meet with one of our very own bus drivers to discuss the safety of bus riders on and off the bus. They will also have a chance to practice loading and unloading students on the bus and take a ride around the parking lot. The do NOT leave the school property. They will be shown a movie and bus safety and read several books. Students who complete this program receive a Bus Safety Super Star Sticker.

Did you know . . .

  • that students are nearly eight times safer riding in a school bus than with their own parents and guardians in cars?
  • that the fatality rate for school buses is only 0.2 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) compared to 1.5 fatalities per 100 million VMT for cars?
  • that each year approximately 800 school-aged children are killed in motor vehicle crashes during normal school travel hours?
  • and that of these 800 deaths, about 2 percent are school bus-related while the remaining 98 percent occur in other motor vehicles or to pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists?

Fire Safety

The Madison City Fire Department brings their Fire Safety / Smoke House to Horizon Elementary. The firefighters talk to all students, kindergarten - 6th grade, about fire safety. Additionally, the students see a movie and go into the smoke house while the firemen simulate a smoke filled room. The Madison City Fire Department provides educational materials relevant to each grade level.
