  • Daughter Catherine in Mr Cooper's 1st Grade, Son Bradley in Mrs. Vandagriff's 6th Grade, Son Hunter in 8th grade at Westminister Academy.
  • Chair of Fundraising
  • Helps with all PTA functions
  • Paralegal at Wilmer & Lee Attorneys
  • Married to William Plott, Pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church which meets at Horizon
  • Loves Alabama football and playing tennis

My Vision of the PTA this Year:

  • Improved communications between Horizon Elementary supporters
  • Greatly increase funds raised by the PTA to be used in the school
  • To provide strong leadership
  • To have strong parental involvement at Horizon

President Responsibilities:

  • Preside over all meetings
  • Serve as an ex officio member of all committees, except nominating committee
  • Coordinate the work of the officers and committees
  • Assist with other PTA functions such as fundraisers, etc.

  • Son Ryan in Mrs Caudle's 4th grade class, 2 daughters Lane 26, and Kait 22.
  • Kathryn is Horizon PTA'a personal workaholic.
  • She works on each and every project we have.
  • Married to her high school sweetheart, husband Lance for 25 years.

My Vision of the PTA this Year:

  • To foster a sense of community amongst the families of Horizon.
  • Raise more money for the children at Horizon
  • Increase male involvement as volunteers at Horizon

VP of Membership Responsibilities:

  • Prepare membership letters for student packets at open house.
  • Coordinate membership drive at open house.
  • Help with the teacher membership luncheon.
  • Collect annual membership information and dues at the beginning of the school year
  • Coordinate with treasurer to submit membership forms and dues to Alabama PTA, late August -
  • Distribute PTA membership cards to all members with receipt for payment of dues
  • Coordinate Back-To-School/Membership Drive Social
  • Promote PTA membership enrollment throughout the year
  • Attend all PTA meetings and provide a report to membership as needed
  • Attend all PTA officer meetings
  • Assist with other PTA functions such as fundraisers, etc.
PTA VP of Volunteers & Programs - Karen Purser

  • Sons Gibson & Hayden in Mrs Wrights 1st grade, daughter Emily at UAB medical school, daughter Lauren teaches dance at The Dance Company.
  • Responsible for PTA programs including Bus Safety, Fire Safety, Severe Weather preparedness.
  • Chair of the Elf Shelf program
  • Co-room parent
  • Manages Papa John's Raising dough for education program.
  • Helps with all PTA events and programs.

My Vision of the PTA this Year:

  • Married to Shane Purser
  • Lifelong dancer enjoys classes in tap, jazz, ballet, and zumba
  • Loves to cross-stitch
  • Enjoys spending time with family and children, and chasing grandchildren.

VP of Programs & Volunteers Responsibilities:

  • Duties include coordinating PTA programs (and/or finding coordinators for these programs) including a back to school luncheon for teachers and staff, Red Ribbon Week, National Bus Safety Week, Fire Safety Week, Reflections Cultural Arts Contest, American Education Week, Family Reading Night, Teacher Appreciation Week, monthly PTA meeting programs.
  • Distribute volunteer survey at beginning of year to develop a database of names of parents and what they would like to volunteer for during the school year.
  • Coordinate getting the right number of volunteers to activities such as: back to school social, Book Fair, Fabulous Friday, etc.
  • Attend all PTA meetings and provide a report to membership as needed
  • Attend all PTA officer meetings
  • Assist with other PTA functions such as fundraisers, etc.

  • Prepare minutes of the General Membership meetings for distribution and approval at the following meeting
  • Prepare Agenda for the General Membership meeting (in conjunction with the President, other officers, principal)
  • Update Bylaws with state PTA every 3 years
  • Take minutes and provide agenda for Board Meetings
  • Other duties as decided by the PTA Board
  • Initiate voting when necessary at meetings (for officers, budget, etc) based on bylaws and Rules of Order
  • Attend all PTA meetings and provide a report to membership
  • Attend all PTA officer meetings
  • Assist with other PTA functions such as fundraisers, etc.

  • Son John in Mrs Blankenship's 2nd grade class, daughter Cortis in Mrs Driggers 2nd grade class, son Cole in 10th grade at Athens Bible School and daughter Lauren is a Junior at UNA.
  • Co Room parent for Mrs. Blankenship's class.

My vision of the PTA this year:

  • Improve communications between parents, PTA Board and teachers.
  • Increase the availability of communication via email and the new PTA website.
  • Decrease paper consumption and cost by making more materials available online and via email.
  • Create a line of spirit wear for the children and parents to help promote school spirit and school pride.

Communications Secretary Responsibilities:

  • Web Master for the PTA website.
  • Chairperson for Family spirit Nights
  • Develops and produces monthly PTA newsletter.

  • Reconcile bank statement. Give treasurer's report at PTA meeting.
  • Pay all bills via "REQUEST FOR CHECKS" forms
  • Deposit all "RECEIVED FUNDS"
  • Attend all PTA meetings and provide a report to membership
  • Attend all PTA officer meetings
  • Assist with other PTA functions such as fundraisers, etc.
PTA Procurement - Deborah T. Edwards

About Me:

  • Son Jaden in Mrs Blankenship's 2nd Grade class.
  • Employed at Redstone Arsenal, Competition Management Office
  • Married to her best friend Gregory Edwards, they have 3 children Derrick, Thomas and Jaden.
  • Attends Calvory Assembly of God in Decatur, AL where she is one of the intepreters for the deaf ministry and also an instructor.

My Vision of the PTA this Year:

  • Improve communications from the PTA to the parents and teachers and leave parents with a better understanding of what's happening at Horizon and with the PTA.

  • Solicite donations of money and items to facilitate the PTA's goals
  • Other duties as decided by the PTA Board (help with socials, etc when needed)
